Google is testing a new feature that merges its AI Overviews with AI Mode in Search, allowing users to seamlessly transition from a snapshot of key information to a conversational interface for deeper exploration. This feature, called AI Mode, launched in the U.S. in May and globally in August, enabling users to chat with Google's Gemini AI. However, users have had to manually switch to AI Mode to engage in more detailed conversations. Now, Google is experimenting with making this process more intuitive by allowing users to delve deeper into topics directly from the Search results page on mobile devices. This change aims to streamline the information-seeking process, making it more natural and efficient for users to explore topics in greater depth. The test comes as Google's rival, OpenAI, delays other products to focus on improving the chatbox experience, with Gemini growing to over 650 million monthly users as of November. Merging AI Overviews and AI Mode could give Gemini an edge in consumer adoption. According to Robby Stein, VP of Product for Google Search, the goal is to eliminate the need for users to think about where or how to ask their questions. Users will still receive an AI Overview as a helpful starting point, but they will be able to ask follow-up questions in AI Mode directly from the same screen, making the process more seamless and user-friendly.
